Xcelsius Earthquake Tracker

Living in southern California and having lived in Los Angeles, the threat of earthquakes is normal. With heavy news coverage of earthquakes these last few weeks, I decided to put together a quick Xcelsius visualization. 15 minutes of research and Xcelsius work led to a Google Map that displays a live XML feed of worldwide earthquakes. Dragging the slider will filter out eathquakes under the user specified magnitude. If anyone has any ideas of some interesting data that I should mashup with the earthquake data feel to share with the group and I will see what I can do to quickly integrate it.

I have included the source files so you can see how it was built.

A Great presentation.

Data that could be interesting to mash:

1. Number of casualties
2.survivors precentage
3.time to re-built
4.migration data after the earthquakes
5.earthquakes times and how many times in same place.
6.weather previous earthquakes effected
new ones, was the magnitude increadsed by a previous earthquake?
7.ia there a time\geographical pattern
that can help predict the about to come earthquakes ?

I love how quickly you're able to develop these dashes. Very cool. I totally agree with Yoav, I also think it would be really interesting to be able to correlate an earthquake with the emergency response/volunteers and fundraising dollars from charities...

Yoav,

This is all very interesting information and I really appreciate you sharing it with the group.

I am thinking that perhaps we do a time line so users can adjust when earthquakes happened. I also like the idea of perhaps using the color to indicate casualties. I will do some more playing around this weekend.

I think we would need better historical data to see what the response in $ would be. This is very interesting analysis that could be displayed as an option in this dashboard. The current configuration is setup to pull real-time data feed for earthquakes as they happen. I think in this case, the earthquakes roll off as new ones happen around the world.

Perhaps I will look to find some historical data about earthquakes in the last 5 years and see what type of information it conveys. I will continue to refine the simple view as we move toward a full blown dashboard.

Thanks again for the great ideas!

Any chance you'll be able to overlay areas onto a google map using xcelsius? So, for example, you could see the population density within particular areas?

We are absolutely going to have overlays for density mapping and polyshapes. I am working on the earthquake tracker 2.0 which will come packaged as a free template with GMaps Plugin 2.0 coming very soon :)
