Google Maps and Dashboards with Xcelsius

In the last year I have been submerged in maps for business intelligence dashboards, specifically Google Maps. When I started down the path to create the ultimate mapping solution for Xcelsius, I knew that if it was done thoughtfully it would eventually be something of substantial value both inside and outside of Xcelsius. For now, I will focus on Xcelsius…

In the next week Centigon Solutions will release GMaps Plugin 2.0 for Xcelsius. GMaps Plugin transforms Google Maps Premier into an enterprise mapping solution for dashboards. We have taken a lot of time to understand what kind of maps customers want to do produce within Xcelsius, so the next version will improve and extend features that make maps even easier to produce.

To give you a taste of what you will be able to create, I re-purposed one of our existing sales dashboard demos with GMaps Plugin 2.0.

With the introduction of GMaps Plugin 2.0, I wanted to answer a few common questions that seem to pop-up with every GMaps Plugin / Google Maps discussion I have in a Q&A format:

Q: Why should an organization use Google Maps Premier when there is a free Google Maps API?

A: Google Maps Premier is intended for organizations who want to deploy content on a secured site, or behind a corporate firewall. Since Centigon Solutions is an authorized reseller/OEM for Google Maps Premier, I have seen every possible deployment scenario for Google Maps for enterprise usage. There is zero exceptions where an organization can deploy Google Maps enabled content behind a corporate firewall without requiring a Google Maps Premier license. If you are doing so currently, you are potentially violating Google Maps terms of use, so you may want to double check to see what licensing you have. If you have questions on this, even if you are not using GMaps Plugin, feel free to reach out to me on this and I am more than happy to provide more information on this subject.

Q: Does a cloud-based solution like GMaps Plugin compromise my confidential data?

A: Security and scalability are always top priority for building enterprise solutions. Security is a legitimate concern, anytime a solution communicates with services hosted on a domain outside of the enterprise firewall. GMaps Plugin contains all of the code required to render latitude/longitude data, data icons, tool tips, info windows, labels, polygons, lines, routes, heatmaps, and other metadata that is displayed to the end user. In other words, at no point is any of the information rendered inside of the Google Map or your dashboard for that matter, transacted from your Xcelsius SWF to the Google Maps service. The only exception to this is when you utilize the geocode service to convert address data during SWF runtime. More information is covered on the new GMapsPlugin.com website: GMaps Plugin Security

There is plenty more to come on the new GMapsPlugin.com web site, and I look forward to sharing some exciting new content built with GMaps Plugin 2.0!

The Future of Flash in the BI Space Article Review

This morning I read a great article from Evan DeLodder, whom I work with at Centigon Solutions, about his take on the future of Flash and BI: “The Future of Flash in the BI Space.” I have previously posted about the topic on my blog, and since have had discussions with other industry experts and the consensus seems to be in favor with Evan when it comes to interactive visualization for the enterprise. For web banner advertising, video distribution, and rich vector graphics for web design, I would say the future is absolutely HTML5 but we not there quite yet.

Flash and MS Silverlight will continue to thrive for a long time as long as the innovation and rapid advancement of these technologies continue, specifically in the mobile space. Not too long ago, we said anything that can be digital will be. The same goes for mobile technology..

Here is a quote from Evan with regard to Flah technology for enterprise applications:

“This advantage ultimately means a faster time to market/delivery, lower development costs (because so much is already baked in and easily extensible), much more flexibility and feature-rich applications that can continuously evolve in shorter cycles with much less effort.”

Sapphire ASUG

Unfortunately some last second items are keeping me from attending the ASUG/Sapphire event this year. I hope everyone has safe travels to and from the event and I look forward to catching up with all of my readers, colleagues and partners at the fall ASUG/BOBJ conference.

Changing Xcelsius chart suffixes

Xcelsius is limited in chart formatting options which we have to find creative solutions for. Making due with what we have, one recent requirement I had was to display a variety of suffixes for an energy related dashboard.

If you use currency as the chart format, you can easily turn off the pre-fix and type a custom suffix. In my case I was able to enter kWh for an energy dashboard.

Remote Scenarios with Xcelsius and SQL

Over the years, I have seen a lot of different business requirements for Xceleius to writeback to a database. The most common is remote scenarios where dashboard end user can persist data to a database so it can be recalled at a later date. Recently for a customer project, my team had re-created the local scenario button user experience with remote storage on a MS SQL 2008 database.

Essentially, the custom Flex component transacts data to a simple .NET web service that triggers a stored procedure. I wanted to see who else has recently had requirements for Xcelsius remote scenarios to see if this is something we can provide to the marketplace. I am in the process of setting up the database on our web server so you can try it for yourself and provide feedback.

Xcelsius Data Insertion Best Practice

Over the last few months I have helped troubleshoot a several dashboards that all led to the same resolution. As it turns out the Xcelsius dashboards were built in a way that conflicts with a basic Xcelsius principle:

You can not configure an Xcelsius component to insert data into cells that contain formulas.

If you think about it in Excel terms… If you select a cell that contains a formula and type a value, the formula will be purged. This holds true for Xcelsius components that insert data into a destination range (primarily selectors and chart drill down). If you bind any Xcelsius insertion property (destination cell) to cells that contain formulas, you will get inconsistent behaviors within the Xcelsius SWF.
